FOUNDATION COMTTEE INITIATIVE
Thenursing profession can be perceived as being the largest segment ofthe nation’s health care workforce given that it has above 3million members. Nurses play a critical role in realizing theobjectives that were set in the Affordable Care Act. There aredifferent barriers that restrict nurses from being in a position torespond effectively with the changing health care setting. It isimportant to overcome the barriers in order to effectively realizechanges in the health care setting. The purpose of this paper is todiscuss the role of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation CommitteeInitiative on the future of nursing and Institute of Medicineresearch that resulted to the IOM report. Importance of IOM will bediscussed. Besides, the role of state-based action coalitions and howthey advance goals of the future of nursing will also be discussed.
TheRobert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) together with the Institute ofMedicine (IOM) launched an initiative in the year 2008 that wasgeared towards granting more access and transforming nursing as aprofession. This was because need arose to transform the professionof nursing so that it is in a position to meet the arising challengesof a dynamic landscape concerning health care. The evaluation of thechallenges that the nursing profession was going through gave birthto the Institute of Medicine of Medicine (IOM) report.
Theentire process commenced a lot earlier when the National Round Tableon Health Care Quality released a statement that called to attentionthe pressing need to upgrade the quality of health care. At thispoint, three problems that needed to be addressed popped up, thefirst being over use, the second under use whereas the third wasmisuse.
Theinitiative was particularly significant to the nursing profession inthat it was realized that there was a need for nurses to practiceusing the maximum extent of their training and education. Licensingand practice rules are different from state to state and this hascontrasting effects on the various types of nurses in differentparts. This is very restrictive because the tasks or rather servicesthat the practitioners in nursing perform are heavily governed byunique state laws instead of the training and education that thenurse has. As a way to counter this, the IOM recommended that nursesbe allowed to exercise to capacity their training as well as theireducation (Evans& Lang, 2004).
Thesecond relevance of the initiative is that it pointed out educationsystems should be improved so that it gives way to a system that isable to promote academic progress that is seamless. The directbenefit of this is that nurses achieve higher education and training. The recommendation was reached after it was discovered that the needsof patients have become more and more complicated by the day. It istherefore very critical that nurses achieve educational levels andtrainings that are higher so that they can march up to the increasingdemands by their patients.
Thirdly,it important for nurses to be full partners with other healthcareprofessionals as well as physicians in making their contributiontowards redesigning health care more so in the United States.Cultivating and promoting leaders in the nursing field is bound toprepare the nurses with the necessary skills to improve and enhancehealth care not to mention advance nursing as a profession (O`Neil& Coffman, 1998).
State-basedaction coalitions are important since they are considered the drivingforce for the campaign at state and local levels. This forms a strongnetwork of diverse stakeholders working to change health care throughnursing. State-based action coalitions are very important inadvancing the goals of future of nursing because they support changesthat are very significant to the future of nursing. It is momentousto realize changes in the nursing setting for the future because, with the changes, nursing will be made better. In the future, it isexpected that nursing profession would be better compared to the wayit is now. However, this would become realized through having severaltransformations. Since state-based action coalitions support thesetransformations, they aid in advancing the goals of the future ofnursing.
Oneof the initiatives spearheaded by the state action coalition is theIndiana Action Coalition. In this initiative, doctors and nurses cometogether so as to transform the nursing profession. This has beenperceived critical in enhancing health and health care in the state. This coalition is usually co-led by a nurse and a doctor. Physiciansare also included in the initiative. Another initiative is theMontana Action Coalition. This initiative comprises different nurseleaders that come together and share their knowledge. With thisinitiative, it is possible to have an easy access to policy makersthat aid in transforming the health care. These two initiatives areimportant in advancing the future of nursing profession since theyhelp in bringing changes in the nursing profession that much neededin the future of nursing.
Currently, there are various challenges that exist, which act as barriers to theadvancement of the nursing profession. One of the challenges entailsthe adoption of technology. Technology is very critical in realizingchanges for the future of nursing. Sometimes, adoption of technologyhas become a challenge due to difference in knowledge parity. Anotherbarrier to the advancement of the nursing profession is cost(Grossman& Valiga, 2012).In realizing changes in the nursing profession, it is important tohave finances because they aid in facilitating the change process.Cost is a challenge because sometimes the needed transformationsattract a lot of expenses.
Thefuture of nursing is critical for the improvement of health care aswell nursing profession as a whole.
