IOMFuture of Nursing Recommendations

Itis projected that nurses will have a critical role to play in thefuture, which will be directed towards providing safe, quality careas well as coverage for all patients in the healthcare system. Thispaper provides IOM recommendations on the future of nursing.

Oneof the recommendations for the future of nursing entails doubling thenumber of nurses having doctorate by 2020. The number of nurseshaving doctorate needs to be increased in order to add to the numberof nurses that can engage in research as well as other nursing areassuch as policy makers. This can be realized through private as wellas public funders, universities, and schools of nursing supportingnurses that desire to pursue doctorate. Besides, it is critical toconsider increasing the number of nurses having baccalaureate degreeto approximately 80% by 2020. In order to realize this, academicnurse leaders in all nursing schools need to work together. Theleaders need to partner with private and public funders, educationaccrediting bodies, and employers to ensure a successful funding andprogress of the program (Kelly et al., 2014).

Anotherrecommendation entails removing scope of practice barriers. It isimportant that APNs should be capable of practicing to their fullpotential based on their education and training. In order to achievethis, Medicare program should be expanded to include APN serviceswhich are within the range of practice under state regulation.Besides, the Medicare program that authorizes APNs to performadmission assessments and certification of patients for home healthcare services should be amended (Kelly et al., 2014).

Besides,another recommendation entails expanding opportunities for nurses todirect and spread collaborative improvement efforts. Public as wellas private funders, nursing education programs, health careorganizations, and nursing associations need to expand nurses’opportunities to direct and control collaborative efforts withdifferent health care team members in conducting research,redesigning and improving health systems. It is also important forthese entities to offer opportunities for nurses to spread successfulpractices (Goudreau &amp Smolenski, 2014).

Anotherrecommendation for the future of nursing concerns the implementationof nurse residency programs. The federal government, health careorganizations, accrediting bodies, and state boards of nursing needto take actions that support nurse residency programs aftercompleting a pre-licensure or advanced practice degree or when nursesare transitioning into new clinical areas (Goudreau &amp Smolenski,2014). Also it is also critical to ensure that nurses become involvedin lifelong learning. Schools of nursing, accrediting bodies, andhealth care organizations need to collaborate in order to ensure thatnurses as well as nursing students continue their education andbecome involved in lifelong learning so as to gain competenciesrequired in providing care for different populations across theirnatural life.

Furthermore,another recommendation for the future of nursing entails preparingand enabling nurses lead change that aid in advancing health. It isimportant for nursing associations, nurses, and nursing educationprograms to prepare a nursing workforce that assumes leadershippositions across different levels. On the other hand, private andpublic as well as governmental health care decision makers need toensure that leadership positions become available and filled bynurses (Cisneros, 2015).

Inaddition, it is also recommended that an infrastructure for thecollection as well as analysis of inter-professional health workforcedata should be built. A collaborative effort that seeks to improveresearch as well as collection and analysis of data concerning healthcare workforce should be put in place by the National Health CareWorkforce Commission (Cisneros, 2015).
